Quick Way to Add Color to Sofia’s Room

Sofia needed a little more color on one side of her room, so I made her a quick colorful pennant to hang on the top of her mirror. It was super easy to do and also pretty cheap. I just got some glitter color card stock from Michael’s, a spool of thin ribbon, and my stapler. I cut the card stock into uniform triangles, folded over the top edge of the triangle to cover the ribbon that I used to hang all the triangles, then I stapled the triangles into place. You can’t even see the staples so I wasn’t going to take the time to bust out the glue gun for this project.

Pennants 2In hindsight though, because I hung the pennant on Sofia’s mirror and you can see the reflection of the back of the triangles, I would have made the pennant double sided so that there’s color on both sides… Not going to change it now though ūüôā .

I also broke out the spray paint and painted her out owl lamp to give her a little more color on the right side of her bed. I painted the walls in her room a very neutral color so that I could infuse a lot of color with accessories.

Sofia’s Room… Almost Done!

I added a couple new things to Sofia’s room and I’m almost done… whew! ¬†I just had to bribe Sofia to clean her room so that I could photograph it and even with her “cleaning,” I still crammed a laundry basket full of Sofia stuff into the closet and shut the doors… Ah, staging a 12 year old girl’s room. ¬†FUN!

Girl Teen Room

I added the pink chandelier from Joss and Main that I think pulled the whole room together. ¬†Although, I suppose tastes differ because when my husband saw the chandelier, he said, “What the heck is THAT?!” ¬†I told him that it’s a chandelier that’s perfectly appropriate in a 12 year old girl’s room and no need to worry that it wasn’t going anywhere he’d have to stare at it for too long! ¬† I didn’t put lightbulbs in the chandelier or even wire it since it truly is just a decorative piece. ¬†Sofia’s got tons of light in her room so I didn’t see the sense hiring an electrician to hardwire it.

I also added the prints above the bed. ¬†Sofia loves Abe Lincoln. ¬†I know, weird, but I don’t know if I could ask for a better person for her to admire. ¬†She was Dorothy in her middle school production of “Wizard of Oz” hence the crazy Dorothy print. ¬†BTW, I love the name of the print (which shows up NOWHERE on the print), “Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh F%&!” ¬†Too funny, since Dorothy is clearly a bad a$$ in this print! ¬†The other print is from a book that I used to read to Sofia when she was little. ¬†You can’t tell but it says, “Love You to the Moon and Back” in that chalkboard writing that’s so popular now.

I also hung a mirror above her dresser that I got from Home Goods and painted the same purple color as the bookcase on the other side of the room.  I tried to find an inexpensive mirror on Craigslist to rehab but no luck.  This mirror is one of those floor length mirrors that I hung horizontally and was only about $70.  With a quick spray , it was exactly what I needed.

The only thing that I still need to do is find a lampshade for the owl lamp on her nightstand and also find a smallish memo board to post next to her mirror and then I’m done!

Sofia’s Room, Progress!

Check ya later beige! ¬†That’s basically what I was chanting for the 20 hours it took to paint Sofia’s room. ¬†That’s right, I said 20 hours… ¬†“Wow, your daughter’s room must be enormous!” you ask. ¬†No… really, really it’s not, but I decided to stencil chevron stripes on an accent wall and it took FOREVER! ¬†But, if I had to do it all over again, I would because I love it, and more importantly, Sofia loves it!

Sofia, being the 12-year-old she is, had set ideas on some of the things she wanted in her room (GREEN AND PURPLE STRIPES and NO pink), but not so much on other things (no opinion on artwork, bedding, etc.) and she told me that I could that figure out.  Yea!  Pretty much free rein on what I could do.

Here are the before and after pics of her room:

Sofia's Room Before

Sofia After on bottom

Her room’s actually bigger than the picture conveys… ¬†She’s got a queen sized bed in there with plenty of room to spare.

I went with green and purple as the main colors with orange accents. ¬†The bookcase went from an oak color to purple and the walls are painted Horizon Gray by Benjamin Moore in satin sheen since Sofia is hard on her walls. ¬† Here’s a close up of the accent wall:

I used a base coat of purple then added Martha Stewart’s purple glitter paint on top to give it some shine. ¬†Sofia said she wanted green and purple stripes and I knew that alternating those colors would look too busy, so instead I did an ombre look with light green stripes at the top then medium green stripes in the middle and dark green stripes at the bottom with one accent purple stripe with a little glitter near the very bottom.

The bedspread is from Wake Up Frankie and I think it goes great with the wall. ¬†I added a two orange pillows that I got from Marshall’s and want to sew a couple of puggle puppy appliqu√©s (as soon as I find out how to do that, thank you You Tube!). ¬†The orange ties into the rug I got from Urban Outfitters¬†that I got for a steal for $20! ¬†¬†The curtains are also from Urban Outfitters and they tie into the gray walls without overwhelming. ¬†I also installed some black-out blinds behind the curtains since my girl likes to sleep! ¬†She’s growing :).

Here are a few more pics from different angles in her room:

And here’s Sofia enjoying her favorite activity!

I still have a few more prints to frame and hang above Sofia’s bed as well as a mirror that I need to find hopefully at a thrift store to mount above her dresser (hence the lack of pics of the other, undone side of her room).

I’m aiming to finish her room in one more week, then it’s off to the next project… ¬†re-screening the covered porch for Thomas for Father’s Day. ¬†It’s been wanting me to do that for a while so I just have to figure out how, but that’s the story of my DIYing ūüôā

Makeover: Sofia’s Bedroom

Sofia, my 12 year old daughter, needed and wanted a bedroom makeover. ¬†I always call Sofia “my odd bird” (in an endearing way :)) and I wanted her room to reflect her quirky personality. ¬†Sofia loves to read, loves music, loves her little puggles, and loves Abe Lincoln (that’s right, Abraham Lincoln). ¬†She wanted green and purple in her room but not in that elegant purple and green combo way; she wanted funk. ¬† ¬†After taking her to look at paint samples and both of us getting frustrated, she said, “Mom, you know what I like and so long as there’s green and purple in the room, you just design the room and surprise me.” ¬†That’s exactly what I needed to hear to go nuts!

I started researching online and found the following things that I thought would be perfect for her:

Sofia's Eclectic Room

I love the eclecticness of this room! ¬†It’s minimal but still colorful. ¬†The colors tie in together but it’s not too matchy-matchy. ¬†To pull this off, you have to have white or close to white walls otherwise it’s color overload.

abePurple and green with Abe Lincoln! ¬†It’s like this designer was reading Sofia’s mind! ¬†I also like the green lamp and hot pink accents.

Gold severed animals as artwork, who wouldn’t love that?! ¬†Sofia loves animals but because she’s quirky, I’m going to replicate this artwork using the animal BUTTS instead. ¬†She’ll love it!

This is a keeper because I want to do one accent wall with these ombre chevron stripes but the stripes are going to be lime green at the bottom going to soft green at the top.

So with all these ideas, I made a mood board since the best way for me to see if things are going to work when I do a room from scratch, is to make a board.

Sofia's Room

Purple, orange, and lime green are the main colors with punches of pink and to neutralize the room, gray and white.

1. ¬† ¬† A gray bedspread anchors the room and gives the eye a rest since the accents in the room are so colorful. ¬†I got the bedspread from Marshall’s for $40.

2. ¬† ¬†This colorful tapestry is from Urban Outfitters for $39 and it will lie on the foot of Sofia’s bed to give the bedding a little color.

3. ¬† ¬†Sofia loves music! ¬†This headphone print is from ZGallerie and will be in the collage above Sofia’s bed along with Abe, the turntable, and the Keep Calm print. ¬†It was $40 for the print.

4.    Same collection of prints as the headphones.  $40 from ZGallerie.

5.    Sofia is also an avid reader and I got this print from the Keep Calm store on Etsy for $20.

6. ¬† ¬†Every girl’s room needs a gaudy, plastic, purple chandelier. ¬†This one is from Amazon for $118 but I’m going to try to find a similar one on Craigslist and just paint it to keep costs down.

7. ¬† ¬†I got 2 little knobs from Urban Outfitters for $10 for the pair to serve as pullbacks for Sofia’s curtains.

8. ¬† ¬†This little wooden jar is from Urban Outfitters for $10 and is perfect for Sofia’s retainer that she leaves on her nightstand that one day I’m afraid is going to become a dog treat…

9.    Lampshade from Target to go onto the lime green lamp base which will sit on her nightstand.  $26

10.  Lamp base from Target for $36.

11. ¬†Awesomely colorful rug from Urban Outfitters for a whopping $18. ¬†It’s only a 3×5 but it’s going to go at the foot of her bed and should be just the right size.

12.  Neutral curtains from Urban Outfitters for $29 per panel.  Great deal!

13.  The Abe Lincoln print from Zazzle for $19.

So, that’s all I’ve ordered for now. ¬†I’m still looking for some pillows for the bed which I might sew myself since I am trying to keep the costs down! ¬†Overall, I’d like to keep the makeover under $500 and so far I’m at $357 plus I still need to paint…
